But Scholz was captivated by the feeling of open planning in the homes and persisted in his undertaking. In addition to an estimated 50,000 houses, Donald Scholz left another lasting legacy — his son, Tom, is a talented musician and songwriter, and founder of the multi-platinum band Boston. They were, in fact, so similar, that the same pictures were used in the company’s newspaper ads all across the US.
Walls and counters are covered with sleek, bright, washable plastic laminates. The household office consists of a drop-front desk contained in a storage wall for table linens, games and hi-fi components. The family room, in the center of the house, is a wonderful room for everyday use or informal entertaining. Its cool spacious atmosphere owes much to the dramatic use of glass that spans one entire wall and soars up to the ridge pole embracing in its 24-foot spread a full view of the secluded patio outside. Dining and living rooms bright with color play their traditional roles in this many-sided household, and do not double for any other purposes.

The Universal pool, installed with filler system, costs from $2,817 for the model below to $4,720, depending on the size chosen. The third area, the bedroom wing, gives each member of the family a private retreat. The long glass walls that open the bedroom wing and family room to the rear terrace, above, and the terrace itself are essential elements in the success of the plan.
The home has been specially furnished for the occasion, with the furnishing and interior decoration coordinated by Scholz personnel, to fit into a master plan for all 75 of the showings. One of several dozen Mark 58s being shown in 75 cities across the country, the Okemos model was erected by John Mercer, builder, using components supplied by Scholz Homes, Inc., of Toledo, Ohio. In addition, the house was featured on the George Gobel-Eddie Fisher TV show last Tuesday, and will be plugged on the Dave Garroway show on June 3, among many other TV and radio bookings. Open houses showings of the Mark 58 are being held in 75 communities throughout the country, very similar to the presentation in Forest Hills by Builder John Mercer and the Peterson Realty company.

His company was sold but continues to design homes under the name Scholz Design. The interior is precisely planned to hold all the linens and other supplies needed for all bedrooms and baths in the house, yet the whole unit is only 3 feet wide, 2 feet deep and 8-1/2 feet tall. In the laundry beyond, all equipment is installed against one wall, leaving plenty of space for shedding wet bathing suits and storing pool and patio accessories. THE LAVATORY and adjoining laundry are readily accessible from family room, terrace, garage, dining room — a wonderful convenience in a busy household.
The Kunsthalle has an overall exhibition space of more than 1,400 square meters. Fashion Design, Textile, and Interior Design Students collaborated for FIDM’s 2021 debut fashion show to curate a collection of a dress, chair, and textile. I had the oppertunity to design and manufacture a chair for the show.

In 1946 Donald J. Scholz founded Scholz Homes in Toledo OH for the burgeoning demand created by the legions of returning GIs. Although not a formally trained architect or even an engineer, Scholz was influenced by Modernist architects like Mies van der Rohe and Frank Lloyd Wright. Although his company built many styles, his California Contemporary ranch homes are our focus here. These homes featured strong horizontal lines and were offered in several facade styles to appeal to a broad array of tastes. Exteriors were sheathed in asbestos board siding, often brightly painted. Scholz even incorporated home decorating into the services he offered, and home buyers had the option to have the company decorate and furnish the house and provide it in move-in condition.
Mercer supports a contention by Scholz that economies of prefab construction, plus local building advantages, are reflected in use of materials and equipment, and allow for more floor space within the price category. Its exterior is contemporary but, handsome as it is, there is more than an architectural facade here. The goodness becomes clear when you begin to analyze it room by room, and feature by feature. “Back in 1938, the common denominator in dream houses was the Cape Cod Colonial, a closed-up house that ignored in its design the wonderful efficiency of heating plants, insulation and insulating glass, and many other modern materials.

To set the table, opposite page, we used Wallace’s “Discovery” sterling, a pattern congenial to both traditional and contemporary design; Royal China’s “Viking” dinnerware to pick up the predominant colors of the room. Thus quantity production has brought the advantages of expert planning, built-in conveniences, fine equipment and materials within reach of a much wider public, at a much lower price tag. The plan makes handsome provision for both parents and children.
Lighting over the kitchen area is supplied by a dropped ceiling of luminous panels. The package included the walls (factory-made panels consisting of framing, Johns-Manville sheathing and siding, door and window frames) and pre-cut framing for the roof. Living room is set apart from the main stream of household traffic, and can be enlarged by its own separate patio. In this room the whole family can entertain, and adults can find quiet there when teen-agers are whooping it up in the family room. Sliding window panels extend the dining room’s visual boundaries to the lush planting at the front of the house.
The Mark 58 was available in four sizes, with components made by Scholz and assembled by local builders. The children’s bath is an inside room, but it basks in the solar glow of its luminous ceiling which is made of Fiberglas polarizing light panels like those in the other bathrooms. To boost the brightness, we chose sunny yellow fixtures, teak-pattern Formica panels for the countertops and walls, and towels of Hyacinth and brilliant orange. Warm morning sunlight pours into the room through the sliding glass doors which can be left open in season to the waft of summer breezes. The living room, secluded from the hustle-bustle of the family room and terrace, is a preserve of comfortable formality. Such luxury would have been found a few years ago only in a house custom-built at a top price.
It bathes the foyer in alternating colors of light with the aid of modern RGB lighting technology. And at the other end of the entrance foyer is a separate dining room.
